Egypt has launched a national Artificial Intelligence Competency Framework for Teachers in collaboration with UNESCO, marking a significant step towards preparing educators for the growing role of AI in teaching and learning.
The framework was officially launched on 3 June 2026 by UNESCO and Egypt’s Ministry of Education and Technical Education. The initiative positions Egypt among the early adopters globally to develop and implement a nationally contextualised AI competency framework for teachers, based on UNESCO’s global framework and adapted to the country’s educational priorities.
The framework is designed to equip teachers with the knowledge, skills and ethical understanding required to use AI responsibly and effectively in education. It builds on Egypt’s ongoing efforts to integrate technology, coding and digital learning into the education system, while strengthening teacher professional development.
The initiative has been supported by collaboration between Egypt’s Ministry of Education and Technical Education, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and UNESCO. The partnership has contributed to strengthening digital infrastructure, connectivity, policy frameworks and ethical foundations for technology-enabled learning.
The framework was developed under the UNESCO-Huawei Technology-Enabled Open Schools for All project and follows a National Consultation and Validation Workshop held in Cairo in October 2025. The workshop brought together more than 120 representatives from government institutions, universities, teacher training organisations, civil society groups, development partners and the private sector.
The consultation aimed to adapt UNESCO’s global AI competency framework to Egypt’s specific educational context, ensuring that the resulting framework reflects national needs and priorities.
The launch comes as education systems worldwide explore how AI can support teaching, learning and administrative processes. By establishing a national framework for teacher competencies, Egypt aims to support the responsible adoption of AI while ensuring that educators are equipped to navigate the opportunities and challenges associated with the technology.
