NASA is supporting the US Genesis Mission, a national initiative aimed at using artificial intelligence (AI) to address complex scientific and engineering challenges and accelerate the pace of discovery.
The mission, led by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, was established through an executive order issued by US President Donald J. Trump on November 24, 2025. It has since expanded to include more than 15 federal agencies as part of a whole-of-government effort to develop and deploy advanced AI capabilities for scientific research and engineering.
Through its participation, NASA is exploring how its missions, scientific data and technical expertise can contribute to the national science and technology challenges identified under the Genesis Mission. The agency is also examining opportunities to develop AI tools that could accelerate scientific research, improve engineering processes and support future space exploration.
“America has invested for generations in the data, missions, and technical expertise that make NASA one of the world’s greatest engines of discovery,” said Jared Isaacman, NASA Administrator. “The Genesis Mission is an opportunity to turn that foundation into faster science, stronger engineering, and better mission outcomes. Leveraging our relationships with interagency counterparts, NASA can advance AI tools that accelerate exploration, strengthen American leadership in space, and open new paths to understanding our planet and the universe.”
NASA has introduced new Genesis Mission National Science and Technology Challenges centred on two key priorities: strengthening US leadership in space and leveraging more than seven decades of NASA science and engineering to drive a new era of innovation.
As space becomes increasingly crowded and dynamic, NASA is seeking to develop advanced systems at a faster pace than traditional engineering methods allow. These systems will need to operate reliably across spacecraft, communications, logistics, surface operations and other mission capabilities.
The Genesis Mission aims to bring together NASA’s expertise in space science and engineering with the computing and AI capabilities of the US Department of Energy. The collaboration could help accelerate the development of complex systems, shorten the path from initial concepts to operational readiness and strengthen the US’s ability to operate and lead in space.
Through the initiative, NASA said its AI research and development could also contribute to broader government efforts, potentially enabling faster scientific breakthroughs, new discoveries and solutions to complex national challenges.
