A Reliance joint venture has announced an eleven billion dollar commitment to develop an AI native data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, marking one of the largest digital infrastructure investments ever made in India. The project signals a bold move to support the country’s rapidly expanding AI workloads and strengthen its position as a global centre for data processing and compute heavy innovation.
The multi phase campus will be designed from the ground up to handle advanced AI training, inference and high density compute environments. It is expected to host next generation GPU clusters, energy efficient cooling systems, high speed connectivity layers and fully integrated cloud architectures tailored for large scale AI applications.
Industry observers note that India’s demand for compute is rising at an unprecedented pace as enterprises, start ups and public sector programmes adopt more sophisticated AI capabilities. The proposed facility aims to address this growing need by providing reliable, scalable and cost efficient infrastructure aligned with global benchmarks for performance and sustainability.
The project is also expected to catalyse economic activity in Andhra Pradesh, with opportunities in construction, engineering, renewable energy integration and specialist data centre operations. Local ecosystem partners including component manufacturers, connectivity providers and AI developers could benefit significantly from the new cluster.
According to the joint venture partners, the campus will prioritise green power usage and sustainability standards, reflecting India’s broader push to balance digital expansion with environmental stewardship. Plans include long term procurement of renewable energy and the deployment of advanced cooling technologies that dramatically reduce water and energy consumption.
Analysts believe the investment represents a strategic milestone in India’s aspiration to emerge as a global AI powerhouse. By creating world class compute capacity within the country, the initiative aligns with national efforts to build sovereign AI infrastructure, reduce dependence on overseas data centres and attract global AI workloads to Indian soil.
The project underscores a growing recognition that AI leadership will be shaped not only by algorithms and talent but by the depth of compute infrastructure supporting them. The Reliance JV’s commitment adds significant momentum to India’s journey towards becoming a major node in the global data economy.
