Amazon has begun trials of its AI‑powered smart delivery glasses, marking a major stride in deploying artificial intelligence and computer vision to improve safety, accuracy, and speed in last‑mile logistics.
Developed specifically for the company’s Delivery Associates (DAs), the glasses create a fully hands‑free experience, displaying package details, navigation prompts, and hazard warnings directly in the driver’s field of view. When a driver parks at a delivery location, the system automatically activates, guiding them through each step — from locating parcels in the van to navigating complex environments like apartment buildings or business parks.
Each device links to a controller unit integrated into the delivery vest, containing operational buttons, a swappable battery, and an emergency contact feature. The design accommodates prescription and adaptive lenses, ensuring all‑day comfort and visibility in shifting light conditions.
Powered by on‑device AI inference and cloud‑supported computer vision, the glasses interpret spatial inputs, identify obstacles, and generate route recommendations in real time. Amazon says the integrated system shortens delivery execution time by allowing couriers to keep their focus forward — no longer shifting attention between packages, phones, and surroundings.
Extensive driver feedback shaped the hardware and interface design. Test participants cited enhanced situational awareness and reduced cognitive load as key benefits. As one driver in the pilot programme explained, “Everything you need is right in front of you — you stay alert, not distracted.”
The company plans to expand testing across North America in 2026, refining both ergonomics and AI performance before a wider rollout. The project builds on Amazon’s ongoing commitment to its $1.9 billion Delivery Service Partner investment, which funds safety technology and training initiatives for independent delivery teams.
Looking ahead, Amazon’s engineers envision integrating real‑time defect detection into future versions, enabling the system to alert drivers if a wrong parcel is dropped off, recognise environmental conditions such as low light or rain, and even flag the presence of pets near delivery paths.
The announcement coincided with two additional technology reveals: “Blue Jay,” a collaborative robotic arm designed for warehouse operations, and “Eluna,” an AI analytics platform offering real‑time operational insights across logistics hubs.
