Thales and ENAC Partner to Advance AI-Driven Air Traffic Management and Aviation Training

A key focus area of the partnership will be the development of AI-based air traffic management and airspace optimisation technologies designed to help airlines improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel consumption

Thales and ENAC (École Nationale de l’Aviation Civile), France’s Civil Aviation University, have announced a strategic partnership focused on accelerating AI-driven innovation in air traffic management (ATM) and strengthening aviation training for the next generation of aerospace professionals.

The collaboration will combine Thales’ expertise in air traffic control systems, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and embedded technologies with ENAC’s strengths in aviation research, regulation, and talent development. The partnership aims to develop advanced air traffic management solutions that improve flight safety, optimise airspace operations, and support sustainability goals across the aviation industry.

A key focus area of the partnership will be the development of AI-based air traffic management and airspace optimisation technologies designed to help airlines improve operational efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. The two organisations will also work on next-generation air traffic control systems intended to optimise air traffic flow, improve flight trajectories, and reduce aviation-related carbon emissions by around 10 per cent.

The partnership reflects the growing role of AI and digital technologies in modernising aviation infrastructure as the industry faces increasing pressure to improve operational resilience, sustainability, and efficiency.

In addition to research and development, Thales and ENAC will collaborate on expanding educational and training programmes in aeronautical engineering and air traffic management. The initiative aims to help prepare future engineers, managers, and air traffic controllers for the evolving demands of increasingly digital and AI-enabled aviation ecosystems.

The organisations said the partnership will create stronger pathways between academic education, research, and industry requirements through initiatives spanning initial training, doctoral programmes, and advanced research opportunities.

The collaboration also builds on existing international projects, including in Mongolia, where Thales’ air traffic management systems are already being deployed alongside ENAC-led training programmes to support the adoption of advanced aviation technologies.

The partners further highlighted ambitions to strengthen diversity within the aviation sector, including increasing the participation of women in aerospace and air traffic management careers.

As aviation increasingly embraces AI-driven automation, predictive systems, and intelligent airspace management, the partnership between Thales and ENAC signals a broader industry shift toward digitally connected and sustainable air transport operations.
